The Mind-Gut Connection

There is a subtle conversation going on between the gut and the brain, which impacts moods and decision making. The history of the mind-gut connection is long. Traditional medicine shows great sympathy between the condition of the stomach and the mental wellbeing of clients. 'Our guts, brains, nervous systems and behaviour are now considered as far more interconnected than previously presumed, largely because of the influence of gut bacteria (the microbiome) on emotional well-being.' (Microb Ecol Health Dis. 2018; 29(2): 1542921.)

Over the weekend we had a lovely chat with Leanne Johnston about the Mind-Gut connection and what to become more mindful of when nourishing yourself, 1) creating a mindful and nourishing environment around food and eating, 2) slowing down eating so that you get the very best from the food you eat but also your digestive track gets smaller chunks of food to process, 3) eating whole foods, fresh foods, seasonal foods and herbs. Also drinking 2 ltrs of water a day to support cell regeneration, and the functioning of the kidneys, liver and elimination system.

My recommendation for students who have digestion and elimination system issues that are often highly correlated with anxiety & depression. The first step is resolving any issue us to become more mindful of it. Begin with mindfulness the relationship and communication between the gut and the brain. Start to listen to the gut because it will tell you on a different level, when you are mentally exhausted. Begin with a 10min stomach massage each night. A 10min stomach massage each night can change your overall mental wellbeing in as little as 7 days. I recommendation to practice variations of Dhanurasana, such as The Sphinx, and I recommend the Twisting Sphinx, turning to look at each heel in turn. You can also use a cushion for support in front of the ribs...
